One category of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH). Emotional and behavioural regulation is extremely difficult for kids and teenagers with SEMH. They frequently react and feel in wrong ways to circumstances.
This indicates that they struggle to establish and sustain relationships with adults and their peers. They may also find it difficult to participate in class and function in a traditional classroom. Children with SEMH frequently experience fear, anxiety, and misunderstanding.
The following are typical traits of kids with SEMH:
Temper tantrums
Disruptive, antisocial and uncooperative behaviour
Frustration, anger and verbal and physical threats / aggression
Withdrawn and depressed attitudes
Anxiety and self-harm
Stealing
Truancy
Vandalism
Drug abuse
Setting fires
According to recent estimates, 150,000 or so students in regular and special education classrooms are thought to be affected by SEMH.
It’s not necessary for SEMH to be a permanent condition. Children and young people can progress and lead successful lives if they have the right help.
